ASMP Los Angeles and MOPLA present the discussion Non-Fiction: The Current State of Photojournalism and Editorial Photography at Julia Dean Photo Workshops.
Photojournalism and editorial photography has changed substantially with the digital age. Magazines and newspapers still publish on paper but what about digital formats on phones, websites and tablets? A panelist of photographers, an editor, and a news agency owner will talk about how the photojournalism world has changed and what factors remain the same.
Panelists include Jeremiah Bogert (photo editor, LA Times), Catherine Ledner (photographer), Michael Robinson Chavez (photographer, LA Times), Melissa Golden (photographer), Brian Frank (photographer), Scott McKiernan (owner of Zuma Press).
Topics include:
- Multimedia and video has entered the picture, but what does it take to produce?
- Non-fiction photography can lead to commercial jobs, but how does that work -
when it does work?
- What's happening to licensing, and what are photographers expected to deliver?

Bruce Davidson’s career spans more than fifty years and is noted for pivotal bodies of work, including East 100th Street, published in 1970. His photography continues today with innovative images of urban landscapes from Paris and Los Angeles. On this evening, Davidson shares his thoughts and recollections of several of his most iconic and seminal bodies of work.
Steidl recently issued the second edition of Outside Inside, a three-volume collection that celebrates the development of this master of photography and reflects the artist’s own journey of consciousness.

IRIS Nights Lecture Series: Mike Theiss: Capturing Mother Nature at Her Worst

Extreme nature documentary photographer, Mike Theiss, will present a lecture at The Annenberg Space for Photography as part of the IRIS Nights Lecture Series. Theiss has documented 24 landfalling hurricanes, over 50 tornados, dozens of waterspouts and numerous other weather events. He spent one week shooting on the summit of Mt. Washington in harsh temperatures of -40°C and with winds over 100mph. Theiss received an Emmy nomination for documenting Hurricane Katrina’s historic 28-foot storm surge from the frontlines in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was recognized by NOAA and the National Hurricane Center for documenting Hurricane Charley – recording 155mph winds and a record pressure of 942mb inside Charley’s eye from his SUV.
Mike Theiss lives with this motto: "I never wish for a weather disaster to happen, but if it happens, I want to be there to document it and share it with the world to send a message of awareness and respect for nature."
Theiss' earliest encounter with nature was at the age of eight when, defying his teacher, he ran up to a large and violent dust devil and stuck his hand inside the vortex to feel the winds. Growing up in the Florida Keys, his entire childhood revolved around weather. He had plenty of practice material for his photography thanks to the many hurricanes, lightning storms and thunderstorms common in the region.
His photography is regularly seen on National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel and The Weather Channel among other networks. His accomplishments include a Second Place NPPA award for "Spot News" in 2006, winning PDN’s "World in Focus" contest and co-authoring the award-winning book Hurricane Katrina: Through the Eyes of Storm Chasers.

Renowned fashion photographer Melvin Sokolsky will speak at Orange Coast College on Saturday, April 16th, at 2:30pm in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. The presentation will be followed by a reception and an exhibition on campus in the Frank M. Doyle Art Pavilion from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
This is the first annual lecture and exhibition series in Orange County as part of the Month of Photography Los Angeles (MOPLA). The public is invited to attend the lecture, reception and exhibition. Admission is free.
John Upton, OCC photography professor emeritus, will introduce Sokolsky, who received the prestigious Lucie Award for Fashion Photography in 2003. Each year the Lucie Awards™, a nonprofit charitable foundation, honors the achievements of the world’s finest photographers.
Sokolsky joined the staff of Harper's Bazaar when he was 21 and has been a major contributor to Esquire, McCall's, Newsweek and Show. His photographs of internationally famous personalities have appeared in many of the major museums and magazines worldwide.
Last year Sokolsky published, “Archive,” a 472-page tribute to a half century of his photographic work.

In association with MOPLA, dnj Gallery presents an artist talk with Maria Luisa Morando. Her exhibit continues her comments on the ocean and the landscape of the coast. Like memories, her images are both familiar and elusive. Morando’s intentionally overexposed images erase the distracting details in the landscape and provide a moment or time without limit. Her scenes offer a true sense of space. As the art critic Michael Buitrón writes, “Because of the lack of sharp detail, it becomes impossible to explore the images for their specificity, and instead they open up and play to any seaside memory the viewer cares to pour into them.”
Maria Luisa Morando is collected privately throughout England, France and Italy and recently sold two photographs at the Foundation For Woman Artists in London England. She has exhibited across the United States, with an emphasis in Southern California.

This show includes an eclectic mix of facial and full body portraiture with elemental mixed media. Featuring the works of 9 amazing artists, About Face puts a new twist on conventional photographic works – incorporating mixed media with traditional photographic portraiture. Featured artists include: Aline Smithson, Anna Stump, Franklin Londin, Pascal Giacomini, Paula Kayne, Stéphane Tourné, Ted Meyer, Wahb Mabkhout, and Tim Sabatino.
Also included in the opening reception will be a live art and model session with Ted Meyer and Anna Stump as they feature their “Exploded Tattoo” series in the alley behind The Loft at Liz’s.

In association with MOPLA, CB1 Gallery will host an artist talk by NY visual artist Susan Silas. The talk will coincide with her two gallery exhibitions, "eyes wide shut" and "A child of sixties television sings songs that got stuck in her head."
For the past decade Silas’ work has focused on landscape and memory. In 1997, she began working on "Helmbrechts walk, 1998-2003", a project in which she retraced the steps of an historical death march of all women that took place at the close of the Second World War, walking for 22 days and 225 miles in Eastern Europe. This work found several forms: an unbound 48 plate artist book, a video installation and a slide projection. It has been discussed in the chapter on her work in the book Memory Effects: The Holocaust and the Art of Secondary Witnessing by Dora Apel and was the subject of an interview with her for a broadcast on BBC radio and more recently with ArtonAir.org.
Silas’ most recent work consists of an ongoing study of decaying birds.
“To put it in terms reflective of Silas’s photographic process and subject, Silas had to find the entropy that would hold us enrapt, keep us from turning away. Here there is no contest. Of all animals, none preserve the beauty and dignity of death with a grandeur and longevity approaching that of the many species of birds,” --G. Roger Denson (excerpted from “On The Resurrection of Dead Birds”).
A selection from this body of work entitled eyes wide shut, 2010 will be exhibited in a solo exhibition at CB1 Gallery in Los Angeles, CA from April 9 - May 15, 2011 along with the premiere of the video performance A child of sixties television singing songs that got stuck in her head.

Albert Watson is a Scottish photographer well known for his fashion, celebrity and art photography, and whose work is featured in galleries and museums worldwide. He has shot over 200 covers of Vogue around the world and 40 covers of Rolling Stone magazine since th...e mid-1970s. Photo District News named Watson one of the 20 most influential photographers of all time, along with Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, among others. Watson has won numerous honors, including a Lucie Award,a Grammy Award, the Hasselblad Masters Award, three ANDY Awards,and the Centenary Medal, a lifetime achievement award from the Royal Photographic Society.
Following the talk, Watson will do book signings of "UFO" and "Strip Search."

Day 1

Day 2
Full on, hands on, workshop with much of the gear an assistant will most likely encounter on the majority of professional photo shoots. Many aspects of assisting will be explained in great detail, i.e. strobes, hot lights, flags, scrims, set etiquette, the assistant kit, tips on getting work, billing, and the dreaded cancelations. Following classroom discussion and demonstrations, participants will have the opportunity to work with the gear along side real-time pro photographers.
Aspiring assistants, students, aspiring photographers, and even established photographers and assistants will benefit from this program.
