Los Angeles-based artists Sarah Rossiter and Dorsey Dunn will present a large-scale installation of image and sound, transforming the gallery into an elevated, floating landscape. Altogether, the installation will consist of a 40-channel sound field and 100 linear feet of photographic wall murals.
[if !supportEmptyParas] Rossiter's wall-size photographs will share a continuous horizon line, creating a panorama of natural and abstract content that places the viewer in an unexpected observatory. Dunn's sound field will take shape of a bird wing, with custom-designed speakers arranged in long arcs throughout over 3,000 square feet of the gallery space. Via this sculptural array, rhythmic, self-generating tone structures sonically unfurl in the space.
This is the first exhibition of Rossiter and Dunn's work at den contemporary art. The gallery also has photographic works by artists Leyla Cardenas, Corina Gamma, and Michael Napper.EndFragment

"Night Lights" is a three-person exhibition featuring night photography byHelen K. Garber, Ginny Mangrum and Bill Sosin. The exhibition runs March 15 to DNJ Gallery in Los Angeles. There will be a preview reception for the show on Saturday March 13th.
Helen K. Garber is known for her night urban landscapes taken in cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Venice, Italy. For "Night Lights", Garber will exhibit new work from her "Venice/ Venezia" series of diptychs which juxtapose Venice, Italy and Venice Beach, CA. Her images are exhibited internationally and are in permanent collections of museums, private and corporate collections nationwide.
Ginny Mangrum will exhibit new work from her ongoing series, "Night Moves". In these photographs, Mangrum stresses the intensity of darkness as she moves throughout the night. She explores interior and exterior spaces, presence and absence of the human subject, and the tension that is created by her voyeuristic observation. Mangrum received her MFA from Mills College in Oakland, CA and is currently an Adjunct Professor at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, CA. She has exhibited her photography throughout California since 2003.
Bill Sosin's contribution to "Night Lights" consists of richly colored photographs capturing urban landscapes in the rain. Sosin's "City Rain" photographs describe the texture, shape, weight, and direction of raindrops at night as well as the twinkling luminescence of the streetlights, fluorescent lights, and storefronts behind the rain. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the Unites States and he has won many awards for his work including the International Lucie Award Official Selection in 2009 and the International Color Award from the Photography Masters Cup, among others

In 1968, American architects Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour, together with students from Yale University, made the city of Las Vegas the object of their study. Their findings, published in the 1972 book, Learning from Las Vegas, are legendary, extending the categories of the ordinary, the ugly, and the social into architecture. Offering great insight into the creation of this groundbreaking publication, Las Vegas Studio: Images from the Archives of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown presents original research materials from the archives of Venturi Scott Brown Associates, including over 80 photographs and a selection of films shot during the authors' research that were a crucial aspect of their architectural study. Las Vegas Studio: Images from the Archives of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown is curated by Martino Stierli and Hilar Stadler in collaboration with artist Peter Fischli. MOCA's presentation, organized by MOCA Curator Philipp Kaiser, follows presentations at Museum im Bellpark, Kriens, Switzerland; Deutsches Architekturmuseum, Frankfurt, Germany; and Yale School of Architecture, Connecticut.

Curated and organized by MOLAA, Changing the Focus: Latin American Photography (1990-2005) is the first survey exhibition to be presented in the Los Angeles area of Latin American photography and photo-based art generated between 1990 and 2005. Organized around four themes of investigation—Subliminal Structures, Embodied Identities, Staged Irony and The Individual & Social Violence—the exhibition explores the artist’s personally-charged response to local and global issues grounded in the contemporary Latin American experience. Over 75 works created by 35 artists from the four regions of Latin America (Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean) range from traditional photography, to manipulated digital photography, installations, light-boxes and photo-based art. The broad experimentation of the art forms play with the viewers imagination and challenge stereotypical norms.

Frederick H. Evans (English, 1853–1943) began pursuing photography in the mid-1880s. Focusing on architecture, he paid particular attention to medieval cathedrals in England and France. His images of York Minster and Ely Cathedral are among the most renowned architectural renderings in the history of photography. He attempted to capture what he called "a record of an emotion," by invoking the potent symbolism of these awe-inspiring spaces. These photographs and other cathedral subjects are displayed alongside rarely seen landscapes of the English countryside and intimate portraits of the artist's family and friends, including writer George Bernard Shaw and artist Aubrey Beardsley.

Highlighting images by three contemporary photographers—each of whom implements a panoramic viewpoint to examine a specific urban environment—this exhibition explores the essential rhythms of three cities while showing the range of technologies used by photographic artists today. Catherine Opie (American, born 1961) created inkjet prints from scans of 7x17-inch negatives of the mini-malls that characterize Los Angeles's automobile culture. Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao (Taiwanese, born 1977) digitally combined color film negatives into seamless inkjet prints for his Habitat 7 project, which traces the route of the New York subway from Queens to Manhattan. By layering hand-cut chromogenic prints made in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, during the summer solstice, Soo Kim (American, born South Korea, 1969) achieved the three-dimensional effect of a semitransparent city.

I was mesmerized with this sepia-toned photograph and dreamed about visiting Italy, especially Venezia as soon as possible. It seemed so exotic -- the magnificent colonnades of the palace, the quiet open space of the piazza, and the elegant costumes travelers wore in the 1920's.
I brought that photograph with me when I moved to California. It adorned a wall of every place I lived. We moved to Ocean Park (Santa Monica) which is right next door to Venice, California. This Venice of America would be the only Venice I would experience until my early 50's.
In the meantime, I have had a studio in Venice, California since 1995. I read all that I could about Abbott Kinney and his Venice of America. Much had changed since the turn-of-the-century, but there still remained a few canals, and a small handful of buildings with colonnades. I photographed the colonnades and used the image for my business card. I left the graffiti that was scratched on one column to define that the photo was taken in Venice rather than Italy's living museum. The architecture seemed so magnificent, that I couldn't imagine that a single stroke of graffiti would ever be allowed to remain on any structure within the boundaries of the city.
It took an invitation to show my work at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2006 to finally visit Venezia. As we approached by boat, the first site of Venice was dazzling. I was truly surprised though when we disembarked. To get to our flat, we had to move through crowded corridors amongst throngs of tourists wearing shorts and T-shirts. My dream was shattered, as the crowd appeared no different than one would encounter on a Saturday, on Ocean Front Walk, at Venice Beach. Litter and graffiti were everywhere. The pigeons were just as disgusting as their California counterparts.
Fortunately for my husband and myself, I am a photographer who specializes in night urban landscapes. We explored Venezia after most of the tourists had returned to the safety and familiarity of their cruise ship, bus or hotel room. Only like-minded travelers remain on the streets after dark. Venezia, like Venice is given back to its residents as soon as night falls.
The Vernissage of the Biennale was magically staged outside the Arsenale. My light silk coat billowed out from the warm wind. A jazz band played as the champagne freely flowed. On other nights, we listened to great music in sparsely populated piazzas and enjoyed wonderful meals in outlying neighborhoods. We explored the canals under a full moon guided by a friend in his boat. The songs of the gondoliers echoed throughout the rooms of our flat.
And so, the romantic vision that came from a lifetime of viewing that photograph from 1922 finally came to life.

"Thousands of people pass through the White House every year, and some of them are lucky enough to meet the President. If you're a celebrity the chances are good that you will. O.J. Simpson was one of the lucky ones, and brought his family along to meet a plaid-clad President Ford in the Cabinet Room in the summer of 1976 (with wife Marguerite, daughter Arnelle and son Jason who appears underwhelmed by the experience). This photo apparently was a prized O.J. posession, and was at the center of a Las Vegas heist in which he tried to recover his own memorabilia at the point of a gun. If O.J.. Simpson had just called me instead of jacking his own memorabilia he might not be in the slammer today. I would have given him a copy of the ohoto, and surrendered it without a fight! Simspon received a 33-year sentence in 2008 for the robbery, but could be out in 2017 if he plays his cards right." - David Hume Kennerly

In an industry that all focus goes to those in front of the camera, it is rare to catch a glimpse of someone responsible for creating those iconic images, Tony Duran. You have seen his images on countless magazine and album covers, campaigns, and editorials.
Touted as ‘the most famous non-famous photographer in the world’ Duran has photographed a virtual who’s who of the Hollywood and fashion set. Duran’s gift is the ability to bring out the sexual side of his subjects sans any inkling towards vulgarity.
There is a sexual ambiguity in Duran’s images that is not achieved through the castration of his subject, but through visual heightening what is truly sensual about the object in front of his lens.
Male and female are treated as the same erotic landscape. It is an intoxicating mix that sends celebrity to new visual heights (one look at Duran’s ten year photographic relations with Jennifer Lopez will show you that.) A model’s career takes the fast track to the top after a stint in front of Duran’s lens. I will be the first to vouch for that. I was one of the lucky models. Years of being a very willing subject in front of Duran’s camera has earned me the right to turn the spotlight on the man that in his own words is part shrink, part clown, part seductor and part devil. Whatever it takes for him to lay down the film that sends people’s hormones racing.
Case Study of Cindy Crawford is Tony Duran's first curated body of work to be released as fine art. Available in extremely small limited editions, the study documents an intimate shoot between the sitter and photographer. 4 X 14: Uncommon Imagery is a group show featuring the work of Southern California photographers who have been developing their unique and personal visions in contemporary photography. Without passion their work could never see the light of success or have an unparalleled place in the contemporary art world.

Evelyn Hofer (1922-2009) began work as a photographer in the mid 1940’s after fleeing from her native Germany and beginning a tutelage under two Swiss photographers. With her superb eye for color, her fine ability as a portrait photographer and as an artistic innovator, it is no wonder she has been described by Hilton Kramer as "one of the most accomplished living masters of the medium.” Her recent exhibition at the Hague, Netherlands, in 2006 was a long-overdue review of her artistic legacy, and followed the release of her first comprehensive monograph released by Steidl in 2004.

Ere Is My Head, brings together 18 selected works by the artist Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili. In this series, Ms. Meskhishvili embraces Roland Barthes’ notion of flat Death, the idea of the photograph as fugitive testimony. Through techniques such as collage and abstraction as well as chance elements, Alexi-Meskhishvili’s photographs—as mortal and fallible representations of what has been and what will cease to be after the click of the camera—at once embody the death that their subjects are bound for, while maintaining a tilt towards the luminous, the internal and the beautiful aspects of memory.
Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia and studied photography at Bard College in New York. She has exhibited in galleries internationally, and has contributed to publications such as Bidoun, Capricious Magazine, and Fantom. She currently lives in Berlin and runs a weekly photo blog called L’ART J’AIME PAS. (ketuta.blogspot.com). This is her first solo exhibition.

How We Live features over 40 large prints suspended by an intricate tensile network of wires which draw the viewer into the lives of the people depicted and which represent the larger issues of societal connectedness or increasing disconnect. Expressly grouped and choreographed, the arrayed field of images frame strategic perspectives that are meant to invoke a different perception, directing one through a visual and emotional progression conveying each subject’s story. Along with the still images, multimedia projection screens are integrated adding an element of further discovery as the viewer comes upon images in the suspended field which are not merely still but rather moving and alive. How We Live is conceived as an experience demanding the viewer to delve into the lives of those photographed. Here, the people and places captured in the photographs are emphasized, employing the same gravity as the exhibit go-er and occupying the same place and time. This new understanding of a shared relationship between the photographs and its audience eliminates the notion of voyeurism and fosters the development of a mutual cause, eradicating any preconceived ideas of ‘us’ and ‘them’.

Born in Boston in 1932, Paul Caponigro is renowned as one of America’s most significant master photographers. When he was thirteen, he began to explore the world around him with his camera and subsequently sustained a career spanning nearly fifty years. He is currently regarded as one of America’s foremost landscape photographers. Acclaimed for his spiritually moving images of Stonehenge and other Celtic megaliths of England and Ireland, Caponigro has more recently photographed the temples, shrines and sacred gardens of Japan. Caponigro also inspires viewers with glimpses of deep, mystical woodland of his New England haunts. He approaches nature receptively, preferring to utilize an intuitive focus rather that merely arranging or recording forms and surface details. Music has always been an essential aspect of his life. Although he shifted from the piano to photography early in his artistic career, he remains a dedicated pianist and believes his musical training and insight contributes significantly to his photographic imagery. In his photographs the visual ‘silence’ becomes as tangible as ‘sound’. Paul Caponigro has exhibited and taught throughout the United States and abroad. Recipient of two Guggenheim fellowships and three National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grants, Caponigro’s images will be found in most history of photography texts and contemporary art museums.

As the artists’ first foray into the world of living geometry, the photographs of Playground play with primary shapes and their literal and symbolic relationship to human subjects and the natural world. In these highly-designed panoramic pictures, Charbonneau and French stray away from the emotionally driven narrative that characterized their previous series, Massillon, to create visual poetry through experiments with proportion, distance, and repetition.
Each picture begins with the artists’ intervention into a found landscape or surface through the decisive placement of objects such as large monochromatic spheres. From there, a scenario is performed which transforms the shapes into effigies of mystery, devotion, and superstition. Fanciful female characters return in Playground, but their diminutive figures are set upon sweeping and stark landscapes as if in a play-space one might comfortably reach into and rearrange on a whim. The spheres to which their attention is often transfixed become reminders of the planetary system which envelops them and perhaps the eternal desire to render it in a familiar plane.
Jeff Charbonneau and Eliza French met in 2004 have been exhibiting together since 2006. Their work has been featured in art fairs both internationally and stateside and is currently traveling in a major exhibition of photographs titled The Art of Caring: A Look at Life Through Photography. This exhibition, curated by Dr. Cynthia Goodman opened at the New Orleans museum of art in 2009 and is accompanied by a monograph. Both artists live and work in Los Angeles.

Pieter Hugos series Nollywood portrays archetypal characters from the third largest film industry in the world, “Nollywood” in Nigeria. Nollywood films, with narratives rooted in local symbolic imagery, lean toward the macabre and melodramatic and are an example of self representation in African culture. Using local actors to recreate scenes and characters inspired by the films, the artist produces intense portraits on the border between documentary and fiction.
Pieter Hugo received the 2008 Discovery Award at the Rencontres d Arles Festival and the 2008 KLM Paul Huf Award. A book featuring work from the series Nollywood was published by Prestel in 2009. Hugo was born in South Africa in 1976 and currently lives near Cape Town.

Diversity in Development will be the first show dedicated to photography at The Loft. The show will be focused on the various methods that photographers Amanda Kelly-Konya, Aline Smithson, Jad Najjar, Gwen Samuels, Mike Saijo, Willa Mamet, Paul Papanek and Franklin Londin use to develop and present their work.
The styles of photography and development range from complex digital 3-D imagery in self illuminated contraptions to the most traditional and fundamental form photography taken with film and developed by hand in a dark room. Themes of the photographs explore issues such as the environment, light and form, repetition and cinema.

Featuring more than 150 works primarily from the Orange County Museum of Art’s significant collection of photography, 15 Minutes of Fame: Portraits from Ansel Adams to Andy Warhol explores a diverse range of portraits from early modernism through contemporary practices. Since the beginning of photography, portraits have captured the well-known as well as the anonymous. With a title that refers to Andy Warhol’s famous prediction that everyone can have their own “15 minutes of fame,” this exhibition includes early modern portraits, photographs of artists and celebrities from the 1930s to the 1960s, photojournalistic images from the 1960s, and contemporary portraiture such as the landmark photographic portfolios Women are Beautiful (c. 1960–1970) by Garry Winogrand and Tulsa (1980) by Larry Clark. In conjunction with this exhibition, a participatory installation: Photo Op will be installed in the OCMA Snyder Gallery where visitors can take and post photographs of themselves in the gallery, becoming an extension of the exhibition.

Stivers' life as a dancer was abruptly thrown to a halt when he suffered a traumatic back injury, shifting his artistic focus to choreography, and then ultimately to photography.
During his prolific photography career, his work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide, including a recent show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Four monographs have been published of his photographs. And, his work is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Bibliotheque Nationale, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Getty Museum, among others.
"The dance he proposes and encourages throughout his work is not merely a dance of the eye-not uncommon in engaging with photographs- but an imaginary dance of the whole body".

i Spy With My Plastic Eye, is a group exhibition visualized by photographer, Astor Morgan. The exhibit, brought to life by A&I, is a testament to the unique qualities of toy cameras. Each artist approached their imagery with a singular voice, using a variety of film types, techniques, and cameras. The photographs in this exhibit speak of gesture, of time passing, of simplicity and complexity, allowing for a wide range of expression. And all of this magic has been captured through an inexpensive plastic lens, part of an inexpensive plastic camera that inspires discovery and serendipity.

What if we could transform the conversation about aging in pictures?
The answer is that we are; and in a very significant way.
The idea is really simple, have older folks document their own experience of aging, in photography, writing and interviews. In all of the extensive literature on aging, no one has ever asked older people, in such an extensive and organized way, to document their own experience of it. With the sponsorship of Samys Camera and Nikon, Brian Braff, a California based portrait and celebrity photographer, provided cameras, tape recorders, and support in two assisted living communities in Santa Monica, California, for a project that is now going worldwide
The photographs, recorded interviews and writings in this show were all contributed by senior citizens whose average age is over ninety. Many had never taken a photo before, but they wanted to tell us what their lives are like, and we are now privileged to see the world through their eyes.
In their contributions to Age Looks at Aging the conversation on aging is being powerfully transformed, adding at long last the voices of those who are most knowledgeable and affected by it.

Jeff Antebi is a photographer who blends war and conflict with art and journalism. He tells his stories from a compelling perspective, covering an array of provocative places including elections and war in Afghanistan, despair and chaos in Haiti, brutal drug cartel slayings in Juarez, a bloody insurgency in South Thailand, Brazil’s notorious illegal favela slums, and the living conditions for Roma gypsies in the Casilino 900 refugee camp. He was the first photographer ever exhibited by the acclaimed StolenSpace Gallery in London, home to Shephard Fairey, D*Face and Pete Fowler, among others. He’s recently been featured by NPR, Rolling Stone and GOOD Magazine. Antebi is also the founder of Waxploitation, where he developed the careers of multiple Grammy Award winning artists including Gnarls Barkley and Danger Mouse, and more recently the band Broken Bells as well as Dark Night of the Soul, a collaboration between filmmaker David Lynch, Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.

In Los Angeles, driving is a daily prayer, a morning renewal. Twice a day it is the space between home and work. For some, driving can be Zen, a time of control, solitude and power, a meditative state that can only be achieved behind the wheel. For others, driving is a time filled with anger, anxiety, fear and loathing to be avoided at all costs. The freeways, structures designed and built like rivers of concrete, have become Los Angeles’ grand monuments.
This series deconstructs the omnipresent Los Angeles freeway system into its component parts, the built environment and the drivers that inhabit it. This work finds solitary drivers in unguarded moments as they speed toward an unknown destination. The color photographs are meant to feel similar to images of surveillance, voyeuristic moments with information that leads in many directions. Are these drivers experiencing transcendent moments or does the drive simply numb the senses, their blankness representing boredom. The idea of car as a second home, a place of privacy and comfort breaks down as we enter the occupant’s space.
These images examine the freeway through the structure of formal black and white landscape photography. I intentionally used an extended shutter speed (up to 4 minutes) in order to allow the cars to move through the frame and disappear from the scene. For the images of drivers, I used a digital camera to capture people as they sped along, some with no destination, unaware they are being photographed in their private worlds. The color is meant to render the drivers in a cinematic style and transform them into an anonymous ‘everyman’ of the road.

Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series is the name of a concert series that was created in homage to the composer/arrangers who have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla¹s unmistakable style.
Both B+ and Eric Coleman are photographers first. In this exhibit as part of MOPLA they will show a selection of photos that inspired the Concert Series.
